Happy Father's Day to the fathers at FundRaiser. Their role as fathers is an important influence on who they are, on the job as well as off.
Josh Shirley is the father of Lily, 18 and Isaac, 15; as well as CFO of FundRaiser. For Josh, he finds that something he carries over from being a father is patience and compassion.
What Josh enjoys most about being a father is seeing them learn about life. "I like when they get excited about learning a new thing-- comprehending it and understanding for themselves how it effects their lives," he says. One of the challenges of being a father that he's learned the most from is being consistent about discipline. "Not being a pushover and finding that line of love and discipline."
Jonathan Smith and his daughter Erin |
Jonathan Smith is father of Erin, 9; and Lead Support Technician at FundRaiser. He says about being a father, "I love the whole process of watching her grow and mature. The whole deal's been fun. I was so afraid of being a Dad, and it has been much more fun than I expected. I don't remember what it was like to not be a parent. I've just been surprised that I've been up to the challenges."
One of the things he likes best about working at FundRaiser is the support he's received as a father. "FundRaiser makes it easy to not worry about the inevitable things that come up with kids. Like last week, Erin was in the office for a couple days. She likes the atmosphere. She actually chose to be here instead of the Boys and Girls Club."
Larry Weaver is father of Travis and Eowyn; and Lead Trainer at FundRaiser. "My biggest pleasure as a parent has been watching them grow up, with kids of their own and turning into good parents." He has been a father on the job and off. "At one point my son, Travis, worked at FundRaiser Support." Being a father has also carried over into his work at FundRaiser in his attitude. "Patience. That's one thing kids will teach you very quickly."
One challenge that he has faced as a parent that he appreciates, came from living up to his words. "I married into a ready-made family. I needed to convey to them quickly that 'I will never hurt you and I will never lie to you.' Living up to that made me more aware of myself and making sure that I stayed true to that."
Happy Father's Day to all of you working in the nonprofit world.
