Frequent Givers? Or recent givers?

A common question that I receive in support is how to see a list of donors who gave in subsequent years. Along with the question, they also want to know who gave multiple times in a year, or even in multiple years. It’s easy to find out the answers to those questions, and more, when you begin with a grouping.

When creating a grouping, on the “common patterns” tab, there are multiple options for different types of donors. The LYBUNT or SYBUNT categories capture your donors who gave last year, but not this year, or some year, but not this year. However, how do you capture those donors who have given in multiple years?

This is where frequent or recent givers can be an especially helpful way to make a grouping. A frequent giver is someone who gives multiple times in a year. As grouping criteria, you can choose just one year or any date range (Three times in the last two years, for example.).

A recent giver is tied more to the numbers of years in which someone donated rather than the number of times someone has donated. The recent givers option for a grouping allows you to check 1 or more years, and select any date range or numbers of fiscal years. This allows you to see who gave in three out of the last three years, for example, or three out of the last five years.

Once you’ve created groupings, then you can use them for donor or donation reports. This will allow you to analyze the information in more detail. Soon, you’ll be able to tell what percentage of your donors are returning donors and in what years. Using the statistical reports, you can even pinpoint exact reasons for giving and the best times to receive gifts.

Frequent donors? Or recent donors? With the help of groupings you can tell which are which and how they help your organization.
