How your nonprofit can plan a successful data migration from one donor management program to another
Part 1 Why move data?
In a survey of FundRaiser users, 50 percent of respondents have moved data from one donor-management software program to another. Of that 50 percent, most have moved data more than once.
The most common reasons for moving data are:
- you need a more powerful donor management program than the one you are currently using
- you aren't able to update or get support for your current program
- you want to share your donor data with another organization or branch of your organization that uses different database software
- you need to move data to another program with different features altogether so that you can work with the data in a different way (for instance moving it into an accounting program)
Yet while data migration may be common, navigating the process can be complicated and overwhelming. In a series of articles over the next few weeks, we'll show you what data conversion entails, how to prepare for a data move, and weigh the pros and cons of various data migration techniques. Thinking these things through will help insure that when you need to move data, you will be able to do it as smoothly as possible
For people working with FundRaiser software programs, the FundRaiser growth path makes moving donor data simple. Built in import/export tools and highly compatible systems mean that you can easily step from one level to another or move from an offline to an online program easily.
